Virtual Trauma & EMDR Counselling Across Ontario

If you’ve been carrying something from the past that still shows up in your body today, you’re not alone.

At Watkins Counselling & Wellness, we offer virtual trauma and EMDR therapy across Ontario, supporting clients who are navigating the impact of childhood trauma, relationship wounds, loss, or distressing life events.

Our work is grounded in attachment, nervous system awareness, and EMDR, and while we are based in Smiths Falls and Richmond Hill, we work with clients virtually across the province.

When Your Body Feels Stuck

You might know logically that you’re safe…

but your body doesn’t feel that way.

Maybe you notice:

  • You’re always a little on edge

  • Certain situations feel bigger than they “should”

  • You shut down, overreact, or disconnect without meaning to

  • Your mind replays things you wish you could move on from

This isn’t a lack of willpower.

It’s your nervous system doing exactly what it learned to do in order to protect you.

Trauma isn’t just about what happened.

It’s about what your body had to learn to survive it.

What Trauma can look like

Trauma doesn’t always look dramatic or obvious.

Sometimes it shows up quietly in the background of your life:

  • Feeling constantly alert or easily startled

  • Difficulty sleeping or settling your mind

  • Emotional numbness or disconnection

  • Sudden waves of shame, fear, or overwhelm

  • Avoiding certain places, people, or conversations

  • Reacting in ways that feel out of proportion to the moment

If your body feels like it’s still bracing for something, that matters.

How Therapy Can Help

As an EMDR therapist, my role isn’t to have you relive everything.

It’s to help your brain and body process what got stuck.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) works by:

  • Targeting how distressing memories are stored

  • Helping your nervous system reprocess those experiences

  • Reducing the emotional charge connected to them

Over time, clients often notice:

  • Memories feel less intense and more distant

  • Triggers lose their impact

  • Their body feels calmer and more settled

  • They can respond instead of react

The goal isn’t to erase the past.

It’s for the past to stop feeling like it’s happening right now.

My Approach to Trauma Treatment

I don’t rush into trauma processing.

We start with safety, regulation, and trust.

Because real trauma work isn’t about pushing through, it’s about creating enough steadiness that your system can actually begin to let go.

In our work together, we may integrate:

  • EMDR

  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

  • Cognitive approaches where helpful

  • Nervous system regulation strategies

Everything is paced based on your readiness, not a timeline.

You won’t be pushed into memories before you feel grounded enough to handle them.

What Healing Can Feel Like

Healing from trauma doesn’t mean forgetting.

It means:

  • You can think about the past without being overwhelmed

  • Your body no longer reacts as if the danger is still present

  • You feel more like yourself again

  • You can stay present in your relationships and your life

That shift—from survival to steadiness—is possible.

Safety can be rebuilt. Healing can be integrated.
